The Western Outer Wall (Predzide) is a lower defensive wall built just outside Dubrovnik's main City Walls. Separate from the main City Walls circuit, it has its own street-level entrance and leads visitors through medieval tunnels, the Foundry Museum, and Bokar Fortress.

If you are looking for the main 1.9 km elevated loop circuit that wraps around the Old Town rooftops, check out our dedicated guide:

This guide focuses entirely on the logistics required to find the hidden entrance checkpoint, navigate the linear out-and-back route, and explore key features like the excavated 15th-century gun foundry and Bokar Fortress.

📍 Exactly How to Find the Separate Entrance

Bokar Fortress and the Foundry Museum cannot be accessed from the main upper city walls walkway. They form a distinct fortification route with a standalone street-level ticket verification checkpoint.

Directions to the Checkpoint:

  1. From the main street (Stradun), walk uphill along any intersecting side street toward the northern boundary walls.
  2. If you approach Buža Gate, ensure you remain inside the stone fortifications instead of exiting.
  3. Follow the upper residential street running parallel to the walls heading west toward Minčeta Tower.
  4. At the direct stone base of Minčeta Tower, look for a short staircase leading up to the isolated ticket checkpoint.

2. The Foundry Museum (Gornji Ugao)

Along the lower corridor, you'll find the Foundry Museum. The heart of this archaeological site is the remarkably preserved 15th-century cast house.

Buried in the 1667 earthquake and uncovered through modern excavations, it reveals the original casting pits where the Republic of Ragusa produced cannons and other artillery.

Final Recommendation

The Western Outer Wall route is highly recommended for visitors who want to explore Dubrovnik's fortifications beyond the main City Walls.

Treat this as its own independent excursion. Taking your time to inspect the medieval casting pits at Gornji Ugao and the low angles from Bokar Fortress provides an intimate look at the military history of the Republic of Ragusa.
