The Fortress Above Margarita Street
At the southern end of Margarita Street stands Fort St. Margaret, built into Dubrovnik’s city walls. Construction began in 1426 as part of the city’s efforts to protect the narrow sea channel between Dubrovnik and Lokrum Island. Like much of the city, it was heavily damaged during the great earthquake of 1667.
One of the fortress's greatest enemies wasn't an invading fleet, but the Adriatic Sea itself. After the 1979 earthquake revealed structural damage, engineers discovered that centuries of powerful waves had carved a large cave beneath its foundations, requiring extensive work to stabilize the rock and preserve this section of the city walls.
