Built between the 12th and 17th centuries, the City Walls form a continuous defensive ring around Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
They include towers, bastions, and fortresses built to defend the Republic of Ragusa against medieval sieges and later artillery warfare.
Today, they remain one of the best-preserved fortification systems in Europe.
How to Find the City Walls
The City Walls surround Dubrovnik’s Old Town and are accessed from several entrances around the fortifications.
The main entrance is located just inside Pile Gate beside the Church of St. Saviour. Additional entrances are located near Ploče Gate and St. John’s Fortress.

Visiting the City Walls
- Cost: Requires a City Walls ticket (€40) or Dubrovnik Pass.
- Access: Strict one-way, counterclockwise loop.
- Best Time: Early morning at opening or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
- Tip: The loop takes 1.5 to 2 hours with hundreds of stairs. Bring water and comfortable walking shoes.
