History and Defense of Dubrovnik’s Pile Gate

Pile Gate is a defensive complex made of two connected gatehouses. The outer Renaissance gate was built in 1537, while the inner Gothic gate dates back to 1460. Together, they formed a tightly controlled entry point into the city of Ragusa.

A deep moat once ran along the western walls, with a wooden drawbridge at the entrance. Each evening, the gates were closed and the bridge raised, sealing the city until morning.

How to Find Pile Gate

Pile Gate is the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town and the primary arrival point for many visitors.

Most buses, taxis, and transfers stop at Pile Square. From there, cross the stone bridge and you will reach the gate directly.
