History and Defense of Dubrovnik’s Pile Gate
Pile Gate is a defensive complex made of two connected gatehouses. The outer Renaissance gate was built in 1537, while the inner Gothic gate dates back to 1460. Together, they formed a tightly controlled entry point into the city of Ragusa.
A deep moat once ran along the western walls, with a wooden drawbridge at the entrance. Each evening, the gates were closed and the bridge raised, sealing the city until morning.
