History and Architecture of Dubrovnik’s Ploče Gate
Ploče Gate served as the main eastern entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town and was built as part of the city’s defensive system.
Like Pile Gate on the western side, it features an inner medieval gate and a later outer Renaissance gate connected by a stone bridge.
The bridge still includes its traditional wooden drawbridge, which could be raised during times of danger to seal the city's eastern entrance.
Directly beside the gate stands Revelin Fortress, the massive defensive stronghold built to protect Dubrovnik’s eastern harbor and land entrance.
