The Dominican Monastery in Dubrovnik
The Dominican Monastery forms the striking backdrop of St. Dominic Street, with its tall stone walls dominating this corner of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Founded in 1225, the complex was built beside the city’s defensive walls and later expanded over the following centuries. Today, its Gothic cloister and stone architecture remain one of the most distinctive sights in the area.
Architectural Detail Linked to Modesty
The stone staircase of the Dominican Monastery features a solid lower balustrade, a design detail linked to everyday movement and historic clothing in Dubrovnik.
Women had to lift their long, heavy dresses in order to climb the stairs, which meant their ankles were briefly visible during ascent. At the time, exposed ankles were considered highly improper in public settings, and the solid balustrade helped preserve women’s modesty in this type of public space.
