The open-air amphitheater at the abandoned Hotel Belvedere served as the arena for Tyrion Lannister's trial by combat in Game of Thrones.

Located just southeast of Dubrovnik's Old Town, the circular amphitheater overlooks the Adriatic Sea and became the setting for one of the show's most unforgettable duels.

History of Dubrovnik’s Hotel Belvedere

Hotel Belvedere opened in 1985 as a luxury seaside resort built into the cliffs above Dubrovnik. It featured over 200 rooms, restaurants, terraces, and pools overlooking the Adriatic and Lokrum Island.

The hotel closed in 1991 after being damaged during the Croatian War of Independence. During the conflict, it was also used as a temporary shelter.

Today, the hotel remains abandoned, but its open-air amphitheater is still accessible from the surrounding grounds and attracts visitors because of its Game of Thrones filming history.

How to Find Hotel Belvedere

Hotel Belvedere is located about 2 kilometers southeast of Dubrovnik’s Old Town in the Sveti Jakov area.

Getting there: The most practical option is a 20-minute walk from Ploče Gate along the coastal road. Cars, taxis, and bus line 5 can also reach the area, but the road layout requires a longer route by vehicle, making walking the faster option for most visitors.

Visiting Hotel Belvedere

  • Cost: Free
  • Access: Open-air amphitheater and exterior grounds, open 24/7.
  • Best Time: Morning or early afternoon for clear daylight without sun glare when looking toward the Old Town.
  • Important: Visit during daylight hours only and stick to the outdoor terraces. Do not enter the interior hotel structures and watch your step as the grounds are unmaintained.
