The Scene Breakdown

After Tyrion Lannister demands a trial by combat, Prince Oberyn Martell volunteers as his champion. Seeking justice for the murder of his sister Elia, Oberyn uses speed and precision to outmaneuver the far stronger Gregor Clegane while repeatedly demanding that he confess his crimes.

With The Mountain seemingly defeated, Oberyn delays the final strike in pursuit of a public confession. The hesitation proves fatal. Gregor suddenly overpowers him, confesses to Elia's murder, and brutally kills Oberyn, sealing Tyrion's fate and delivering one of the most shocking moments in the series.
