Explore Scene →History of Dubrovnik’s Rupe Granary
Completed in 1590, this large 16th-century building was used as a key grain storage facility for the Republic of Ragusa. It is known locally as “Rupe”, meaning “holes”, a reference to the deep storage silos carved directly into the rock beneath the structure.
These underground pits were lined with a waterproof coating to protect stored grain from moisture and pests. With a capacity of up to 1,500 tons, the system allowed the city to maintain food supplies during sieges or poor harvests.
