History of Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac was built outside Dubrovnik’s western walls to defend the city from naval attacks. Perched high above the Adriatic on a steep rock cliff, the fortress became one of the Republic of Ragusa’s most important defensive positions.

One unusual design detail reveals how seriously Dubrovnik guarded its independence. The outer walls facing the sea are extremely thick, while the inner wall facing the city is intentionally much thinner. If the fortress were ever captured or used in a rebellion, Dubrovnik’s own cannons could destroy it from within the city.

How to Find Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac is located just outside the western walls of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a short walk from Pile Gate.

From the main entrance plaza, follow the stone steps down toward Kolorina Bay (Pile Bay) and continue along the coastal path to the fortress staircase.

The walk from Pile Gate to the fortress entrance typically takes 5 to 10 minutes.
