Explore Scene →History of Fort Lovrijenac
Fort Lovrijenac was built outside Dubrovnik’s western walls to defend the city from naval attacks. Perched high above the Adriatic on a steep rock cliff, the fortress became one of the Republic of Ragusa’s most important defensive positions.
One unusual design detail reveals how seriously Dubrovnik guarded its independence. The outer walls facing the sea are extremely thick, while the inner wall facing the city is intentionally much thinner. If the fortress were ever captured or used in a rebellion, Dubrovnik’s own cannons could destroy it from within the city.
